Submissions are invited for a special edition of the AFRICAN PERFORMANCE REVIEW on Popular and Social Dance in and out of Africa

The edition will be guest-edited by
Dr Sarahleigh Castelyn (University of East London, United Kingdom)

Central Theme of the Special Edition:

The main objective for this special edition of African Performance Review is to provide a useful introduction to current popular and social dance practices from Africa or that emerge as a result of the African Diaspora to a wider international community of students, scholars and practitioners. This proposed edition is a necessary response to the inclusion of a number of African and African Diasporic dance practices in performance, theatre, and dance studies programmes worldwide. The edition aims to not single out any one particular popular or social African/ African Diasporic dance style, nor a specific geographical location, nor a dance company or crew that makes use of popular and social dance forms in their choreography, rather the edition hopes to stress the current diversity and complexity of popular and social dance practices in and out of Africa; a snapshot of dance, dancers, and dance-makers at work today in this area.

Structure and Content:

The structure of the journal will map the landscape of current popular and social African and African Diasporic dance practices. The articles might involve a study of a social dance from a particular region, an examination of a training system used to support a popular dance practice, an investigation into how a dance practice explores African or African Diasporic youth identities, or, perhaps a study of the relationship between African-American and African dance practices. I am very much interested in the edition reflecting the current diversity and complexity of popular and social African and African Diasporic dance forms.
