Dance Department at Oberlin College -- tenure-track position

The Dance Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning in Fall 2015 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor of Dance.

The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (currently 4.5 courses per year) in the area of contemporary global dance, with a focus on transnational, intercultural and hybrid movement practices, particularly those connected to Asian, African and Latin American countries and their diasporas. The incumbent will teach courses primarily in the areas of dance technique, choreography and repertory. Among the qualifications required for appointment is an MFA degree or equivalent professional background. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees.

The Dance Department functions within the liberal arts tradition at Oberlin College. Though many of the students go on to be successful dancers and choreographers, the emphasis in the Department is on encouraging students to create, perform and think about movement in a manner that is consonant with their experience in the other fine and liberal arts. The Dance Department at Oberlin College offers students a unique opportunity to explore how embodied cognition facilitates the integration of academic learning with personal experience, leading the students into becoming more creative problem solvers and helping them to connect abstract concepts to the physical reality of their bodies. The incumbent in the Contemporary Global Dance position will not only expose students to new worlds of dance, but also help them engage in negotiating cultural differences undefined in practice, as well as in theory.
