Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance to provide leadership for the Movement Studies track within the Dance major.

We are seeking candidates who have at least 3 years of college teaching experience in Laban Movement Analysis, and/or other Somatic practices. Candidates also should be able to teach Modern/Contemporary Dance, and/or Ballet at the beginning through advanced level. Ability to teach some additional courses such as Anatomy/Kinesiology, Dance Composition, Pedagogy, additional Dance styles, and/or other Dance History/Theory classes is desired. Choreographing for departmental productions is optional.

The Department seeks a dynamic and innovative teacher with a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. In addition to providing leadership for the Movement Studies track within the Dance major, candidates will be expected to work with colleagues to maintain forward momentum in an evolving Dance curriculum that serves students from all the Claremont Colleges, Dance majors, minors and non-majors alike. The preferred candidate will demonstrate a proven or potential record of professional research in Somatics and/or Choreography.

The teaching load is five courses per year plus supervision of senior theses and some concert productions. Student advising and college committee service are also required. Participation in the Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities program is expected. MFA, PhD or DPT preferred along with certification in Laban Movement Analysis and/or other Somatic practices. ABD and professional experience may be considered. Preference will be given to applicants with a commitment to the College’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students.
