The University of North Carolina Asheville seeks an experienced teacher and scholar in dance for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The candidate must have a terminal degree, either an MFA in Dance or a PhD in Dance Studies, Cultural Studies, Performance Studies, or a related field, at time of appointment.  Candidates with a background in cultural studies or ethnomusicology are particularly encouraged to apply.  The successful candidate will have substantive experience as a dancer in addition to academic credentials.  The department or program of appointment will depend on the academic background and interests of the hire.

This faculty member would be expected to teach courses in dance history, composition, and at least one formal dance technique (either Western or non-Western), as well as courses which integrate the study of dance and movement with other disciplines, particularly Drama, Performance Studies, and Cultural Studies (Africana Studies, Asian Studies, and others).  The candidate would be expected to contribute to courses in these departments and programs as well as in interdisciplinary programs, such as Arts and Ideas and Humanities.

UNC Asheville has offered courses in Dance for many years, with a minor in Dance in place since 2000, relying on non-tenured faculty.  With this position, we wish to more closely link dance to other academic disciplines, both in the performing arts and in non-performative areas of study.  We are therefore seeking a candidate who is able to articulate a strategic vision of the ways in which the study of dance can be integrated with other departments and programs in the university in both curriculum and programming.
