President's Letter Winter 2008

Dear CORD Membership:

I hope that you and your family enjoyed a restful holiday season.  For those of you who are engaged in academia, I hope that your spring term is off to an enjoyable and productive start.

I am writing to you regarding several changes, opportunities and challenges for CORD.

CHANGE FROM BROCKPORT TO PRIME MANAGEMENT

The CORD board has been reviewing the mission of our organization and how it can best be administered for the benefit of our membership now and into the future.  After much discussion, the board recommended that we move to Prime Management Services. After serving as CORD’s home for many years, the CORD office at SUNY Brockport was closed as of December 1, 2007.

Jim Ranieri and his associates at Prime Management have been very helpful and enthusiastic in assisting us to make this transition to their company.  As some of you know, they also serve our sister organization, SDHS.

Our contact information now is:

Congress on Research in Dance

Email:  cord@primemanagement.net
Phone:  205-823-6106
Fax:  205-823-2760

MEMBERSHIP

If you need to renew your membership to CORD for 2008, please contact Jim at the email listed above and he and his associates will be happy to renew your membership.  We have a standing Membership committee on the Board of Directors.  Kista Tucker will continue to serve as our membership chair.  If you have any suggestions regarding membership, or if you would like to serve on that committee, please contact her at :  kista@rochester.rr.com.

ELECTIONS

It is time for us to request from you suggestions for membership on the Board of Directors for CORD.  Over the last several years, Candace Feck from Ohio State University has served as our Chair for our Elections Committee.  This year, SanSan Kwan from California State University in Los Angeles is chairing this committee and overseeing the elections.  Here you will find SanSan’s Call for Nominations.  If you have an interest in nominating yourself or someone who you think would best serve our organization, please direct your recommendation to SanSan at sskwan@calstatela.edu

CORD CONFERENCE IN 2008

In November of 2008, Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia will host the annual CORD conference.  Ananya Chatterjea from the University of Minnesota and Thomas F. DeFrantz from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are serving as this year’s Conference Co-Chairs.  The conference theme has expanded from that publicized at the CORD Paris and New York conferences.  Here is the most recent Conference Call.  Please review it.  I hope that you and your colleagues will consider submitting a paper, panel, or workshop to this very exciting conference.  Do not hesitate to contact Ananya or Thomas with your questions and ideas.  I would also like to point out that Donna Faye Burchfield, the Chair for the new Master’s Program in Dance at Hollins University and the Dean of the American College Dance Festival is very open to our encouraging the participation of our graduate students in this conference.  Contact information is available on the Conference Call.

FINAL COMMENTS

Over the next several months, I will contact you with the most current information regarding changes with CORD.  Our move to UIP Press and to PMS will offer us opportunities to grow and expand in areas that we hope will better serve you.

It was a pleasure to see many of you in Paris and New York this past year and to gather your feedback on these and other initiatives that CORD is looking into at this time.

Though my time as President is coming to an end, I look forward to serving you over the next several months and working with our incoming President, Barbara Sellers-Young, to make this transition smooth and efficient.

May your winter be beautiful but not too cold!

Ray Miller
President of CORD

(Ray Miller is Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University.)
